TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Wairoa Maori Film Festival generally encourages entries from Maori, Pasifika and indigenous-identified film makers from around the world. The focus on our programme is Maori film, being dramatic and documentary works about the Maori people of Aotearoa New Zealand. We also present a programme of Pasifika films, dramatic and documentary works about peoples of the Pacific who are "whanaunga" (related by blood, ancestry and tradition) to the Maori people of New Zealand. Our international indigenous programme is diverse and covers many cultures, many worlds, many lives - we encourage entry by all to the international indigenous category, however space in our weekend-long film programme is limited; more so for international works.

The nature of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival is a celebration of Maori film. We accept film works by Maori, for Maori and about Maori; Maori on film, Maori in film, Maori making film. We want to profile Maori Directors, Maori Producers, Maori Scriptwriters, Maori Multimedia Artists, Maori Actors, Maori Actresses, Maori Technical Workers, Maori Animators, Maori Cinematographers and Maori Editors. Where the lead creatives for a Maori film are Non-Maori, then some evidential basis of Maori consultation or involvement of a Maori Advisor to the production is required. See: Brown Book: Maori Protocols Document. (Available on iTunes) We want to see authentic stories that can engage Maori and indigenous audiences as well as appeal to mainstream cinema goers.

As a festival of Maori, Pasifika and indigenous film, we are interested in film works that advance native film making and the progression of a "Fourth Cinema" canon. The Wairoa Maori Film Festival is part of a growing international network of indigenous film festivals that seek to both nurture and grow their native film making communities, and build global native audiences for indigenous storytelling on screen.

Our ongoing commitment to the growth and development of Maori film making is representative in the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, our nation's founding document and a genuine cultural partnership that has resulted in a cultural renaissance and language revitalisation in Maoridom.

TECHNICAL CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERATION

  1. Wairoa Maori Film Festival requires a screener of the film entry (DVD, Blu Ray, or File in h264 or MP4 format) for consideration of entry. Online screeners qualify, but online screeners whose links change or are removed are automatically not open to consideration for entry, as the film work is no longer able to be previewed.

  2. Each year a Closing Date for Festival Entries is set. Unsolicited Festival Entries not received prior to or on this date are automatically not open to consideration for entry.

  3. Wairoa Maori Film Festival requires completed film works. Films that still require final edits, sound mix, colour gradation or any other technical completion processes are automatically not open to consideration for entry.

  4. Wairoa Maori Film Festival does not accept films into entry that are already available for viewing publicly online. Such works are automatically not open to consideration for entry.

  5. Wairoa Maori Film Festival requires a signed original or digital scan of the Official Entry Form for each specific year. Films received without completed entry form are automatically not open to consideration for entry.

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Space for Entrant Screenings is limited. Non-assigned entries are retained. No correspondence will be entered into. Entries received without review materials will not be accepted for entry. Entries with a cost for screening will generally not be accepted into competition, but can be accepted out-of-competition on a case by case basis. Entrants are encouraged to include supplementary material with this completed form (publicity stills, publicity & marketing materials, press kit, posters).

The Wairoa Maori Film Festival reserves the right to cancel screenings due to circumstances beyond our control.

Films can be entered into the Wairoa Maori Film Festival on an in-competition or out-of-competition basis. Short film awards are decided by audiences attending the Wairoa Maori Film Festival. The remainder of film awards are decided by the Festival Executive Committee, with the assistance of a Panel Jury should time allow complete review of the finalised programmed entries.

Entering your work to the Wairoa Maori Film Festival offers rights to screen entered works by festival organisers at the Wairoa Maori Film Festival event and follow-up showcase screenings in Wellington, Auckland and other NZ venues TBD. The Wairoa Maori Film Festival does not guarantee that entries accepted into the main Wairoa Maori Film Festival event will be incorporated into the other regional programmes.

 Organisers of the annual Wairoa Maori Film Festival reserve the right to alter date of festival event subject to factors beyond our control (inclement weather; non-availability of venues; or other reasons of unexpected circumstance).

Entrants to the Wairoa Maori Film Festival grant the right to utilise an excerpt from any film submitted and accepted for exhibition at the Festival for promotional purposes.

All entry viewing DVDs / files are retained in the Wairoa Maori Film Festival archive. We regret that we are not able to return DVDs / files provided for viewing and consideration purposes.

Acceptance of the above conditions of entry confirms that the entrant shall indemnify and hold harmless Wairoa Maori Film Festival Inc. from and against any and all claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees, and costs of the court) which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the screening videos entered.
